Issues: High Street Resurfacing

The Way it Was

February 2004. The High Street is 4 years overdue for resurfacing, and it shows! Potholes like these are very uncomfortable for cyclists, not to mention being dangerous for all road users. Is this really the main street in a town in the 'prosperous' south east of England?

March 2004. Patching the patches is not really a solution. The main drain cover at Church street is collapsing. The pedestrian crossing in Baldock Road has almost ceased to be.
Work Starts at Last

20 October 2004: a sign of activity! On 2 November the machinery moves in and starts to strip the old surface north of Norfolk Road.

Moving swiftly south, and sweeping up as they go, they've removed the old surface by the end of the day.

It doesn't take long to work back up the High Street and lay the new surface (any colour as long as it's black!).

Baldock Road and Station Road are surfaced the following week (8-11 November 2004).
Job Done!

A pristine road surface in the High Street... and white lines (very quickly) painted outside the CoOp and in Baldock Road. It's nice to have the pedestrian crossings back. All done by 13 November 2004.
... or is it?

A pity that Highways didn't quite roll it flat at Hare Street Road, or come back and level the ironwork – these are uncomfortable little potholes, which will probably start to disintegrate long before the rest of the surface.
